I have nothing left to say for this piece, other than I've never spent that many hours on a painting in my life. Good god, what a learning experience.

My only goal was to create a portrait as photo-realistic as possible with Dawn in it. I think I got pretty close. Also to serve as a possible book cover for when I complete the first novel in the series.

God my hands. They regret this entirely.

This is like a tenth of the original size, so it's scaled down quite a bit. I'll add closeups later if need-be.

Time: I lost count at 120+ hours
Programs: SAI and Photoshop

Dawn and Artwork belong to Me; Take her and I cut you up, bro.

You are such an inspiration to me. I cannot even fathom painting anything humanesque, especially using a computer! All I can manage to do is write and sketch with pencils. XD

This is a beautiful piece, don't you ever forget that! The way you can color emotion awes me.

I will say this: you have so many great strengths, and I know that you've worked your ass off to attain them. That being said, I'm a critical person at heart, so I hope you won't mind a few minor critiques!

First things first, though, your transitions are beautiful. From the texture around her lips to the lips themselves; jaw to throat, eyelids to under-eye, shit girl, this is fabulous and I can see where your analytic prowess paid off. You've given so much attention to detail here, and all the hours you bled into this really show. I'm honestly blown away by how beautiful this portrait is. ALSO HER SHOULDERS HGGHN I really think this piece benefits from a clear focus--you didn't hyper render her shoulders like her face, and so the shoulders look very natural to me, as this is how the human eye would phase out anything other than her lovely, rendered face. <3

That being said, the tip of her nose looks a bit narrow in proportion with her eyes, and lovely though her brows and lips are, they don't seem to lend any story or emotional connection to her tears. I'm not wondering why she's crying, I'm wondering how--it isn't that I've never seen stoic tears, but as a character illustration, this doesn't reach out and make me feel for her. I'm confused, as a reader of the painting. I saw the WIP version you had on your tumblr without the tears, and I honestly found that one more compelling--it looked more photorealistic, and the tears didn't distract me from all of the beauty and effort you poured into this painting.

Nevertheless, this is all heart and soul, and I see it, I feel it in the final execution. You've never been one to do things half way, and I admire that so much, because you've inspired it in me. You try so hard, girl, and that's more than enough reason to look up to you and everything you aspire to do. <3

tl;dr you and Dawn are lovely strong independent ladies who go through a lot of shit and still manage to kick ass and take names.

Haha you know I ADORE long comments, I really do. Thank you so much for that hugely wonderful insight. Everyone REALLY likes her shoulders for some reason, so I guess that's a good thing, yes? xD

I fussed endlessly with her nose so that's probably no surprise haha. And as for the whole face emotion thing, I could have noted I did that on purpose. I originally had her expression adjusted to look more authentic, and decidedly changed it for a more symbolic purpose regarding the story. I guess it doesn't really make sense without explanation, though, and everyone's just left looking at a stoic-faced Dawn who happens to have tears on her face. But anyway, I know what you mean haha. I might end up changing it back later; I flipped between stoic and emotional for her expression for about a half-hour before sticking with the blank expression. But yeah, noting I did intend to do that, though the execution wasn't the greatest. x_x

Thank you so much for your heartfelt words. It means a lot
